It's not Broadway, but another great thing about the Pleasant Hills area
is the access to all major cultural activities in a small town
setting. You can be at the symphony, opera, or a Broadway Show
within minutes.
Pittsburgh, always a natural stopover between Chicago
and New York, has been a mecca for jazz talent since the days when the
Theater Owners and Bookers Association sent musicians around from city
to city. There's a long list of jazz musicians, from Billy
Eckstine to Art Blakey to Mary Lou Williams, who were born in Pittsburgh
and who went on to help shape the future of jazz.
One Headquarters for culture activities is the
PITTSBURGH CULTURE TRUST at 125 Seventh St., Suite 500 in downtown
Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh Culture Trust and WQED Pittsburgh
provide a (800) PHON-ART (800) 746-6278 hotline with 24-hour-a-day
information on the regions arts. Daytime phone number is (412) 471-6070.
A good web address to check out culture events is www.carnegielibrary.org/subject/pgh/events.html.
