Recreation
If you
want sports,
recreation, parks, and attractions, you've moved to the right
area. We could go on and on about the many opportunities for
recreation in the Pleasant Hills area: boating, camping, cycling, hiking, racing
rowing, skating, skiing, soccer, tennis, white water rafting, you
name it. Allegheny County has the largest recreational boat
registration in the state. Some of the best and diverse
fishing is available in western Pennsylvania. Bass, trout, pan fish,
northern pike, pickerel, muskellunge, walleye, perch, catfish, and
practically every species outside of the Allegheny
Mountains. Allegheny county also has one of the highest
populations of golf courses in the United States and if snow
skiing is your sport, there are a number of local
opportunities. To check these things out, access the world
Wide Web at www.pittsburghlive.com
(go to the Pleasant Hills Library if you don't have access to the
web and ask a staff member to connect you!) Sports
and recreational facilities in the Borough and vicinity are ample
and varied. Besides the local parks described below, residents
have easy access to the Allegheny County parks system. The
system is a network of nine parks, comprising nearly 12,000 acres
of beautifully landscaped fields and woods. The system is
one reason why the quality of life in Pittsburgh and it's
neighboring towns and cities is so attractive. The major
county park facility of interest Pleasant Hills residents is South
Park. On a pleasant Saturday or Sunday in the summer, some
100,000 people can be found in South Park- a great portion of the
population of Pittsburgh. It has a wave Pool, summer
concerts, tennis, horseback riding, hiking, biking, skiing, ice
sports, and a model aircraft airfield. Access the web at www.pittsburghlive.com
to find out more here. Pittsburgh
is undeniably loyal to it's professional sports teams: the
Steelers, Pirates and Penguins. While usually most of the
sports banter is over the teams' players, lately there's been a
lot of talk about the teams' homes. Both the Pirates
and Steelers began their 2001 seasons in brand new venues.
The Pirates are now in beautiful PNC Park, just east of the old
Three Rivers Stadium on the North Shore while the Steelers play at
equally-impressive Heinz Field, just west of the replaced
stadium. The University of Pittsburgh Panthers also play
home football games at Heinz Field. The Pittsburgh Penguins.
too, are negotiating for new or renovated facilities. Mowry
Park in Pleasant Hills Mowry
Park provides 12 acres of recreational area for the citizens of
Pleasant Hills. Home to four lighted ball fields, five
pavilions, two tot sized playground areas and a refreshment
building. Mowry Park is a major hub of activity during the
summer months. Pleasant Hills Borough also sponsors outdoor
movies in Mowry Park on warm summer evenings. Schedules are
available at the municipal building beginning in mid June. In
August of each year, Mowry Park is the site of the Pleasant Hills
Community Day, a community event in which many service, church and
athletic organizations host booths to display their activities
and/or provide refreshments. Entertainment is also offered
and it is customary to begin the day with a community parade and
end it with a giant fireworks display. Borough
Building Park The
Borough Building Park is the home of "Pleasant Kingdom",
an elaborate playground with a jungle of wooden walkways, mazes
and ladders surrounded by picket fences and topped with peaked
roofs. This playground is a precious symbol of the
camaraderie of the citizens of the Borough of Pleasant Hills and
surrounding communities. It was built largely with volunteer
labor and is today a great source of community pride. In
addition to Pleasant Kingdom, the Borough Building Park also has a
pony league field, a basketball court, two picnic shelters and
lighted tennis courts. Pleasant
Hills Boulevard Park Renovated
in 1993, Pleasant Hills Boulevard Park contains a playground, a
fire truck climber, a basketball court and a picnic shelter.
Pleasant Hills Boulevard Park also has a roller hockey court, and
is the site of a popular program run by the Pleasant Hills Roller
Hockey league. Maize
Fields Soccer,
another popular sport in the Pleasant Hills area, is played on
Maize Soccer Field. Built in 1980 with the help of the Army
Corps of Engineers, this area is also the location of Maize
Softball Field. One of the highest points in Allegheny
County, this site boasts a great view of the area. PHARA The
Pleasant Hills Athletic and Recreation Association (PHARA) offers
youth athletic programs in baseball, football, softball and
basketball. All PHARA in-house programs are instructional in
nature with all participants guaranteed playing time in every
game. PHARA also provides travel leagues and tournament
teams which compete with teams from neighboring communities.
In this way, PHARA hopes to meet the needs of all the children in
its program, from those playing for recreation and instruction to
those aspiring to more competitive play. Check out the web
page at www.pharaweb.com to
