In the tradition of providing first class protection and public
service since 1947, the Pleasant Hills Police Department has developed a proactive mission
to enter the 21st century. An ongoing commitment remains in place to progressively expand
the capabilities and operational design of the Department.
Technical advancements include interfaced work station computers, computerized
dispatching of emergency services and incorporation of the Total Utilization Pilot Project
for Enhanced Resources (T.U.P.P.E.R.) system. The ability to interact with surrounding
departments and services has added to efficiency and officer safety.
Among significant upgrades in equipment have been emergency light bar systems, on-board
eye witness video cameras and recorders and vehicle design renovations, as well as
transition to the semi-auto pistol from the revolver. Traffic enforcement has been aided
by the use of VASCAR, E.S.P. (Excessive Speed Preventer) and the infra-red speed detection
device.
Reaching beyond mere statute enforcement, a Community Services Division includes Crime
Prevention, D.A.R.E. (Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education) and Community Oriented
Policing units. Seminars in the area of prevention are presented for adult residents and
businesses.
The new Communications Center assures immediate response to calls for emergency
service. Once again, the ability to quickly interface with nearby departments and medical
providers makes timely action a reality.
United States Department of Justice grants have enabled the borough to hire new
officers to augment the patrol force. With municipal funding limited, the acquisition of
federal monies aids greatly in meeting the cost of police force expenses.
Specialized schools and training enable the Department to equip its officers for
particular assignments. These include crime scene photographer, juvenile crimes, sexual
assault, field training, traffic enforcement, bomb call, criminal case investigation and
prosecution.
