PLEASANT
HILLS LIONS CLUB
The Lions Club of Pleasant Hills is an
integral part of our community and Lions Clubs International. We were chartered February
17, 1941. We have enjoyed a continuous period of service to Lionism and the community
since that time.
The original club had 27 chartered members
and membership has pretty much maintained that average over the years. Current membership
averages around 33 members, representing the professional, business and retired segment of
our community.
Dinner meetings are held the first and
third Mondays of each month from September through early
June at the Brass
Rail Restaurant which is located in the Bill Green Shopping Center, 10 Old Clairton Road. At the
meetings, brief business announcements and/or reports are given and then a guest speaker
or possibly some project work completes the program. A steak fry picnic in Mowry Park
marks the beginning and ending meetings of the year. There are also member/spouse dinners
at Christmas and at election of officers in May. <return to top>
FARMERS MARKET The Pleasant Hills Lions Club
has announced that the Farmers Market will begin operations on May 16,
2008. The location remains the same, Pleasant Hills Presbyterian
Church parking lot. Look for more vendors this year!

WHAT DO LIONS DO?
Lions are men and women who volunteer their
time to humanitarian causes in their local and world communities. By conducting service
projects and raising funds, Lions strive to help those in need wherever need exists. The
Lions motto is "WE SERVE."
In 1925 Helen Keller addressed the Lions at
their annual International Convention challenging them to become "knights of the
blind in the crusade against darkness." Since that time service to the blind and
visually impaired has become one the associations most significant activities. That
crusade has resulted in the establishment of Sight First, a global blindness prevention
program.
In addition, Lions participate in service
activities emphasizing diabetes awareness, education and research work with the physically
and mentally impaired, environmental issues, community welfare, international
understanding and youth.
The association was founded in Chicago,
Illinois in 1917. Although it is the youngest major service club organization, Lions Club
International has grown to be the worlds largest. It has 1.4 million members in over
180 countries and geographical locations.
To the Lions, "We Serve" is not
only a motto but a definition and philosophy. <return to top>
Eye
Glasses
The Pleasant
Hills Lions Club still collects old eye glasses. Before you toss
them out, why not drop them off at the Pleasant Hills Library. A
collection box is located inside the lobby to the right of the
door. If you prefer, contact one of the Lions above or send an
email to the "feedback" address listed above. A member
will get touch with you. Thank you.

HOW
FUNDS ARE RAISED
Funds are raised by selling brooms and
household supplies in May, hosting the Great Giveaway Auction in April, a spaghetti dinner
in March, sending Eye Seal Letters and soliciting for White Cane Day in October,
conducting Blood Analysis Screening and hosting a Pizza Booth on Community Day in August.
Mints, Trash can liner sales, and gum machines provide funds year
around. <return to top>
